The George Mosse Stoney house was constructed circa 1798 and is shown in early paintings and photographs of Beaufort. Built in the Federal style, the house was remodeled in the Greek style in 1838, when wide double piazzas were added to further capitalize on the sweeping views and prevailing southern breezes from the Beaufort River. At that time, rear rooms were added to the structure, which was originally one room deep, creating a classic T-shaped Beaufort house. The property was occupied by the Union Army from 1861-1865 and in 1866, Austrian jeweler Moritz Pollitzer, one of a number of European immigrants who arrived in post-Civil War Beaufort, purchased the home.
